Tech: HTC unveils first 3-D smartphone

3-D technology has made its way into the smartphone market, with the release of EVO 3-D from HTC. The Android phone allows users to capture and view content in 3-D via its high-definition display without the need for 3-D glasses.

According to HTC Asia senior product marketing manager, Justin Zhang, the EVO 3-D phone is targeted at users who would like to see content in 3-D. “As 3-D becomes more popular in both movie theatres and at home, the ability to enjoy it on a mobile phone will change the way people interact with their devices,” he said at the launch in Kuala Lumpur recently.

HTC has no specific target users for the EVO 3-D phone but feels it would appeal to users like real estate agents who can create and share virtual 3-D tours of homes that would let potential buyers to walk through the house without having to go to the show unit.

Despite the lack of 3-D content in the market, HTC is bullish about the phone’s uptake.

Based on studies by ABI Research, mobile 3-D devices will be driven by three key applications — creation of user-generated 3-D content by integrated video and still cameras, playback of 3-D content and 3-D gaming.

The company also anticipates that mobile devices may turn out to be the most successful items in bringing 3-D technology into mainstream markets.

“3-D is here to stay and the contents are building up. Most of the new movies are now produced in two formats — 2-D and 3-D,” says Zhang.

The 4.3-inch EVO 3-D phone, powered by 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, features Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. Priced at RM2,199, the phone will also be available on Maxis and DiGi data packages soon.
