"THIN" is a buzzword at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where the race is on to fit more technology into streamlined, ultra-skinny devices.

Acer is grabbing headlines with the unveiling of the world's thinnest Ultrabook while Toshiba has stolen the title of world's thinnest Tablet from Asus's quad-core Android Tablet, the Transformer Prime, with the announcement of its Excite 10 Tablet.

Acer's 13in Aspire S5 Ultrabook measures 15mm at its thickest point and weighs in at less than 1.35kg.

The most recent version of Apple's 13in MacBook Air - a product that is often cited as the instigator of the Ultrabook trend - is 2mm thicker and tips the scales at 1.35kg.

The Aspire S5 also packs in a high-speed Thunderbolt port, the company's Instant On technology which can wake the laptop up in 1.5 seconds, and the ability to wake up and access the computer remotely via a smartphone or Tablet.

"The Ultrabook is much more than just a product segment," said Jim Wong, president of Acer. "It's a new trend that will become the mainstream for mobile PCs, and customers will see the unique features gradually extended across Acer's notebook family."

Toshiba's 10in Excite X10 Tablet is thinner than a pencil (and most smartphones) with its 7.7mm profile. The Transformer Prime is 0.6mm thicker at 8.3mm and the iPad 2 is more than one millimetre thicker at 8.8mm.

The sleek-looking Excite X10 proudly claims to be the lightest tablet on the market too, weighing in at just 0.54kg. Toshiba's price tag for the device comes in at US$530 (RM1,669) for the16GB version and US$600 (RM1,890) for the 32GB version.

For that price you'll get a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, dual 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras, a Micro USB port, a Micro HDMI port, an SD card slot and a 10in 1,280 x 800-pixel display. LG is also following the thin trend with its latest line of 3D TVs.

The Cinema 3D Smart TVs sport the company's "Cinema Screen Design' and an almost invisible bezel that measures just 1mm.

The Android-powered Toshiba Excite X10 should appear in stores during the first quarter of 2012. The Acer Aspire S5 will start shipping in the second quarter of 2012. The LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs will be available in 2012. - Relaxnews 2012
