KUALA LUMPUR: Today's computer networks are becoming highly dynamic due to the continuous introduction of newer complex technologies, systems and applications. This, said cybersecurity firm Sourcefire, is resulting in information security risks multiplying in both number and scale.

Also, the attackers are becoming more sophisticated and better at maintaining stealth, said Ivan Wen, country manager for Sourcefire Malaysia.

He said the battle for network security is increasingly depending on businesses and other organisations achieving information superiority over their attackers.

"If the attackers establish information superiority first, it becomes very difficult to protect against or remove them from your system. So, as a network defender you need to be able to see everything on your network," he said.

This is where Sourcefire hopes to come in. Claiming to have raised the bar in the network intrusion-prevention sphere to another level, the company recently unveiled the new Application Control feature in its latest Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS) solution.

The solutions is to provide corporate users with the utmost visibility into what's running on their network.

Wen said this feature enables enterprises to control access to thousands of applications, as well as provides custom detection-and-control features for homegrown applications.

These equip the IT managers with decisive threat-mitigating controls to reduce attack surface and to enforce user policies, he said.
